OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness) is a performance indicator (KPI) used to measure the overall effectiveness of a resource (plant, machine, department…) within a production process. It is a crucial metric for manufacturing industries, as it provides a clear understanding of how effectively production resources are being used.
What is OEE?
OEE is a percentage calculated using three main components:
- Availability: Measures the time equipment is available for production compared to planned time.
- Performance: Assesses the actual production speed versus the maximum theoretical speed.
- Quality: Considers the percentage of good products produced compared to the total produced.

Usually, the OEE index, along with other KPIs, is easily obtained through MES software and production management systems.
Why is OEE Important?
OEE helps to identify areas where the production process can be improved. A low score in any of the three components can indicate specific problems, such as frequent machine downtime, production speeds below standard, or a high rate of scrap or rework.
